Overcome Hair Loss with Safe and Effective Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

If you are experiencing hair loss, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy at Mitchell Dermatology may be an option for you. PRP injections help repair hair follicles and stimulate hair growth.

What is PRP therapy?

Your blood contains platelets — cell fragments essential in blood clotting. PRP therapy involves injecting platelets containing growth factors into your scalp to stimulate hair growth.

In some cases of hair loss, your hair follicles don’t die, so PRP therapy aims to reactive them. The injected growth factors reactivate hair follicles and promote blood circulation, which helps to thicken the hair shaft.

What to expect during PRP treatment

Our team will draw about 30-60 ml of blood from your arm during a PRP treatment session. The needle contains an anticoagulant to prevent the blood from clotting. Next, the blood is placed in a centrifuge, which separates platelets from the rest of the plasma contents.

We numb your scalp to minimize discomfort, then we put the platelet-rich plasma in a syringe and inject it into your scalp using micro-thin needles. Depending on the extent of hair loss, you may need many injections per session.

A typical PRP therapy session lasts about 30-60 minutes. After the session, you experience minimal downtime. Your scalp may appear red and feel tender to touch, but this side effect lasts only a few hours. In addition, you may experience some swelling in the scalp, but this should dissipate in a couple of days.

How long does it take to see results?

Most patients see optimal results after three to six months when they have completed about three monthly sessions of PRP therapy. Dr. Mitchell may combine PRP with other treatments for a longer lasting outcome.

How many PRP treatment sessions do I need?

A full course of PRP therapy requires about three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. The results of PRP aren’t permanent, so you may need a maintenance session at least once or twice a year. However, the number of treatment sessions depends on the type of hair loss and the extent. Dr. Mitchell will provide tailored advice depending on your unique treatment needs.

Ideal candidates for PRP therapy

Although PRP works for most hair loss cases, some may require other interventions. Before treating you with PRP, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of your hair loss. PRP has shown successful outcomes for the below types of hair loss:

  • Androgenic alopecia: PRP works for male-pattern and female-pattern baldness, although results are optimal if you start treatment at the early stages of hair loss.
  • Alopecia areata: PRP has shown promising results for patients with an autoimmune disorder that causes hair to fall out in clumps, leaving bald spots.
