Dermal or soft tissue fillers are made from a variety of different ingredients. Some of the most popular include those formulated with hyaluronic acid. You know HA-based fillers by trade names like Juvéderm® and Restylane®. Sculptra® is derived from poly-L-lactic acid and has been in medical applications for decades, for instance, in dissolvable stitches. So, it is a clinically proven safe material.
While Sculptra® is administered much the same way as other fillers, using precision techniques and ultra-fine needles, there are notable differences. First, you won’t see immediate results. But the results that are achieved are worth the short wait. Second, these differences can be attributed to Sculptra’s status as a “collagen stimulator.” Sculptra® does not merely add volume to fill in folds and to plump up sunken areas. It triggers a process in which more firming collagen proteins are produced. Since this process takes time, results are revealed gradually, usually over a few months and within three sessions. Due to these unique features, Sculptra® is a long-lasting filler. Results can last for two years or longer.

Hope Mitchell, MD, is the founder and medical director of Mitchell Dermatology and an Ohio board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist with over 25 years of experience and expertise. Dr. Mitchell obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Rochester and Doctorate of Medicine from The Medical College of Ohio, where she also completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a Pathology Fellowship. She also completed a residency in dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She advocates mentorship, education, and diversity in medicine and dermatology. She is the founder of the Mitchell Dermatology Student Gap Year Internship Program. She has been featured in many newspapers and magazines and is also a speaker for Google and Black Women in Media too. Dr. Mitchell is the Vice Chair and Director of Research for The National Medical Association, Dermatology Section.
