Hyperhidrosis

The prescription for excessive perspiration: From Qbrexza® wipes to injectable Botox® for hyperhidrosis

Sweaty armpits, hands and feet can be stressful and have a tremendous negative impact on your life. Mitchell Dermatology empathizes with the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with sweaty, smelly areas of the body. Furthermore, our experienced board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Hope Mitchell or Physician Assistants, effectively treat excessive sweating (known as “hyperhidrosis”) to avoid myriad complications related to persistently damp skin.

Individuals with hyperhidrosis in an area are at greater risk of developing bacterial and fungal infections, athlete’s foot, intertrigo, warts, and other problems that can affect their mobility and overall health and well-being.

From our offices in Perrysburg and Fremont, Ohio, we provide a variety of trusted treatment options from prescription medications to Botox® therapy, that offer effective and well-tolerated ways to sustain dry, comfortable, fresh, and fancy-free feet.

Excessive sweating no more!

While this condition can be secondary to the side effects of diseases like diabetes or the medications used to treat chronic illnesses, primary hyperhidrosis is generally associated with faulty nerve signaling. They trigger the sweat glands to become overactive. Primary hyperhidrosis is also typically localized. So, it is common for the sweating to be isolated to a specific body part. Notably, sufferers may have particularly sweaty hands, feet, and underarms.

Although perspiration or sweat helps regulate our body temperature, sweating excessively, regardless of environment (heat), activity (strenuous exercise), or situation (nervousness and anxiety), can ruin clothing, produce a bad odor, cause skin infection and rashes and  have an adverse impact on your mental health. It’s estimated that individuals with hyperhidrosis sweat four to five times more than the “average” person – way more than the body needs to cool down or otherwise remain healthy.

A prescription for (excessive) perspiration

When storebought deodorants/antiperspirants, or other over-the-counter products fail to live up to their “sweat protection” promises, you may be prescribed a more powerful medical treatment. Options include prescription antiperspirants that contain higher concentrations of ingredients like aluminum chloride than their counterparts at the drug store.

Qbrexza®, a cloth or wipe or Robinol an oral medication are newer treatment options for hyperhidrosis.

Botox® blocks sweat

Since 2004, Botox® has provided relief to individuals with hyperhidrosis that is not properly controlled with OTC or prescription products and medications.

Each treatment can be completed quickly, with no downtime, and patients should notice significantly drier areas within four weeks. Results from Botox® for hyperhidrosis generally persist for around six months, though every patient is unique and results can vary.
