Chemical Peels

Everything you need to know about the minimally invasive Chemical Peel procedure

Our skin tells the story of our lives, whether it be scars from acne or injuries, melasma due to hormonal changes, photodamage from hours of fun in the sun, or laugh and smile lines around our eyes and mouth. At Mitchell Dermatology in Perrysburg and Fremont, Ohio, Dr. Hope Mitchell offers a variety of anti-aging and skin rejuvenation treatments, such as chemical peels, specifically designed for your unique skin concerns.

Benefits of chemical peels for your skin

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a specialized chemical solution to remove the outer layers of skin, revealing the healthy and vibrant skin below the surface. Different chemical peel formulations are available to target each patient’s individual skin conditions, and peels can range from superficial to deep, with deeper peels typically providing more dramatic results but requiring longer recovery periods. Some of the common conditions that Dr. Mitchell treats with chemical peels include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Mild scarring from injuries or acne
  • Freckles, age spots, and uneven skin tone
  • Some types of acne
  • Dry, rough skin patches
  • Dull complexion
  • Melasma (dark patches) due to birth control pills or pregnancy

While they are most commonly used to refresh your facial appearance, chemical peels aren’t necessarily limited to use on the face. Certain formulations can also be used to revitalize skin on your hands, neck, and décolletage.

Peels Before and After

How chemical peels are performed

Prior to performing your chemical peel, we will first gently cleanse your skin to remove dirt and oils and then protect your hair and eyes, so the peeling agent does not touch them. Depending on the depth of the peel you will be receiving, anesthesia may be administered. We will then apply your customized peeling solution, which will cause a controlled injury to the outer layers of the skin. We will then wash off or neutralize the chemical solution to stop the process.

Recovery from a chemical peel depends on the depth of the peel performed. Superficial peels have little downtime, and most patients experience only a mild sunburn-like reaction that goes away after a few days to a week. Medium and deep peels have a longer recovery period of about two to three weeks. We will perform an in-depth consultation with you to determine the best peel for your needs and give you time to ask any questions, so you are confident about your treatment plan.

Personalized skin care to help you reach your goals

Prior to getting a chemical peel, it is essential to work with a qualified dermatologist who has a good understanding of your medical history, skin type, and treatment goals and preferences. While some chemical peels are great for all skin types and tones, patients with darker skin are at greater risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels may also not be advised for certain patients due to their medical history, so it is important to talk with a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Hope Mitchell, who understands which options work best for your skin.
