THE RESURFACING, TIGHTENING POWER OF MICRONEEDLING AT MITCHELL DERMATOLOGY IN NORTHWEST OHIO

Dr. Hope Mitchell has seen many exciting technologies be introduced to dermatology throughout her 25-year career in the medical field. Some of these techniques, such as microneedling, are older than you may think. But they have been improved upon with the introduction of new devices and innovations that help with skin tightening. Medical Microneedling and Radiofrequency Microneedling (RFMN) are quick and non-invasive ways to treat signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, sagging skin and uneven skin tone.

What is Medical Microneedling vs. Radiofrequency Microneedling?

The process of microneedling can be traced back to the early 1900s. It generally involves creating a controlled injury or producing channels, microscopic in size, within the skin. In creating such “wounds” in a controlled manner, microneedling stimulates the production of firming collagen proteins. Both medical grade microneedling and Radiofrequency Microneedling jump-start the skin’s intrinsic ability to heal, leaving you with tighter and smoother skin. With microneedling in Northwest Ohio, we can regenerate your skin with minimal downtime.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses needles to create tiny holes in the skin that basically trick the body into believing the injury needs repaired – which basically it does! Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment creates microscopic injuries (pinpricks) in the skin using miniature, sterilized needles and leads to increased collagen and elastin production. An increase in these proteins leads to a smoother complexion and healthier skin.

Radiofrequency microneedling represents one of those “twists” on the well-established procedure, except it adds an additional layer to the process – radio waves or heat! Once the needles enter the skin and create the injury, radiofrequency energy or heat is delivered to targeted tissue causing more controlled collagen breakdown that will lead to new collagen and elastin formation and improved skin quality and texture.

If you wish to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and sagging skin, adding radiofrequency therapy to microneedling treatments can significantly boost the efficacy. Combining the two treatments further stimulates collagen formation, resulting in healthier, firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

FAQs

What Areas Can Be Treated With Medical Microneedling and Radiofrequency Microneedling?

Medical Microneedling can be used to treat any area of the body that needs tightening or thickening. The devices used in medical practices are not the same as “at home” devices directed to consumers for purchase. The systems used at Mitchell Dermatology can penetrate deeper into the skin and give more dramatic results. The most commonly treated areas are the face, neck and chest but it can also be used on scars or stretch marks. Treatment can be customized for smaller areas (the jaw and under-eyes) and larger ones (such as the belly).

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING OR RADIOFREQUENCY MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE?

The skin is cleaned and a topical numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes. The cream is removed and the microneedling pen or radiofrequency microneedling laser handpiece is passed over the skin. Patients most commonly feel a sensation of pinpricks and heat. After one – three passes over the targeted area(s), the procedure is either ended or a targeted serum to help you achieve your goals is applied. The treatment portion of each session takes about 15-30 minutes. For better results, we may add:
– Tranexamic acid to improve uneven skin tone
– Hyaluronic acid to improve dry skin
– PRP for skin rejuvenation

WHAT WILL I LOOK AFTER MY MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE?

Depending on which microneedling device is used, the depth of penetration or the number of passes, there may be minimal pinpoint bleeding, mild swelling or rednessto the appearance of a bad sunburn or bruising for the first 24-72 hours. There may be dryness or mild peeling that can continue for about 3-5 days. You can wear makeup (mineral preferred) about 24 -48 hours after the procedure.

WHAT ARE MY AFTER MICRONEEDLING SKIN CARE INSTRUXTIONS?

We recommend that you apply cooling gel packs to your skin after radiofrequency microneedling treatments; otherwise, do not apply anything to your face after your microneedling treatment at Mitchell Dermatology in Northwest Ohio for 8 hours. Avoid sun exposure or use mineral, zinc-based sunscreen with sun exposure. After that you can cleanse and moisturize your skin with the products provided to you.
