As a Board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Hope Mitchell possesses the qualifications, knowledge, and on-site capabilities in Fremont and Perrysburg, Ohio, to diagnose, treat, and manage over 3,000 conditions. These conditions not only affect the skin, but they can also damage the nails and hair. And, by age 65, it’s estimated that 53% of men and 37% of women will experience hair loss. At Mitchell Dermatology, hair loss treatment is not only effective but also carries with it minimal risk of adverse side effects and complications. It is also well-tolerated and doesn’t require the substantial recovery and downtime associated with conventional forms of hair restoration.
In the past, those with hair loss had limited options. These options included surgical procedures such as grafting (hair plugs), scalp reduction or repositioning to place the hair-bearing skin over balding areas, and other surgical interventions that actually expanded hair-bearing skin over bald patches. Conventional hair restoration/transplantation generally involves an increased risk of infection or scarring at the treatment site, as well as an uneven or “patchy” appearance. Additionally, such methods have required a long recovery. Advancements in hair restoration methods, products, and technologies now enable dermatologists like Dr. Mitchell to treat hair loss in its various forms without the need for surgery.
We have numerous options! Notably, we may recommend minoxidil. This medication, best known by its brand name Rogaine®, works by increasing the delivery of essential nutrients to the hair follicles. It also helps to shorten the resting and extend the active phase of hair growth, and increases the size of the follicles to thicken hair. She may recommend the Nutrafol® system, which uses nutritional supplements/formulas to accelerate hair growth and improve both the thickness and density of the hair. Alternatively, Dr. Mitchell may prescribe medications like oral corticosteroids to reduce the body’s immune response, which is responsible for attacking and inflaming the follicles (leading to hair loss). She also performs in-office hair restoration procedures. She may inject corticosteroids or platelet-rich plasma.
For corticosteroid injections, Dr. Mitchell selects medications such as triamcinolone acetonide. The anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant medication of choice is then injected into the balding/thinning areas with a fine needle. Once injected, corticosteroids support normal hair growth due to their immune-modulating properties and by reducing the inflammation around the hair follicles. For PRP, this healing cocktail is prepared using a small sample of your own blood. The process that follows is similar to other injections; we draw the PRP into a syringe and use a thin needle to inject it into bald or thin patches on the scalp. Regenerative growth factors in PRP stimulate circulation to the follicles, improve hair shedding, and accelerate regrowth.
With these and other treatments available at Mitchell Dermatology, it can be a matter of trial and error. We may start with certain medications and approaches and see how your body responds to treatment. If those interventions don’t work, we have other options to choose from; however, it is also important to exercise patience. Hair grows in cycles. It can take several months to notice big changes in the overall thickness and density of your hair.
To begin your hair restoration journey, schedule an evaluation today. During your visit, Dr. Mitchell reviews your medical history and may take samples of your blood and perform other tests to understand your needs. With an understanding of the nature, severity, and source of your hair loss, she can then suggest options to restore your hair to its “crowning glory.” Call 419.871.3737 to speak with a member of our team in Fremont, OH, or call 419.871.3636 to reach our office in Perrysburg.
