Acne is one of the most common skin disorders that Dr. Hope Mitchell and our team at Mitchell Dermatology treat. It also tends to peak at specific ages, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. In fact, acne affects around 85% of pre-teens, teens, and adults aged between 12 and 24. We understand the physical, emotional, and mental toll that this condition can take on our patients in Fremont, Perrysburg, and across northwestern Ohio. As a Board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist who treats a diverse range of patients, Dr. Mitchell has the expertise to effectively and safely treat acne so you can lead your best life and avoid future complications (like scarring), too.
There are lots of myths about what causes acne. No, you don’t get “zits” due to eating lots of junk foods or chocolate. Pimples don’t develop because you are dirty or your hygiene is lacking. As teens enter puberty, hormonal changes occur. Increases in estrogen and testosterone stimulate the sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for oil production. Excess oil clogs up your skin’s pores. When this happens, bacteria thrive, multiply, and cause inflammation that shows up on the face as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, nodules, and cysts.
Good skincare tailored to each patient’s needs is essential for everyone. However, if your skin is not responding to the products and techniques mentioned above, Dr. Mitchell has access to more powerful products and medications. These may include prescription topical antibiotics and retinoids, such as adapalene and tretinoin. Depending on the severity of your acne, Dr. Mitchell may discuss oral antibiotics that work throughout your “system” to fight acne-causing bacteria and minimize swelling. Isotretinoin (formerly known as Accutane®) is also a more aggressive prescription medication that actually shrinks the size of the oil glands. Due to its safety profile, it should only be prescribed when other treatments haven’t worked.
Professional treatments are available at our offices. As appropriate, these treatments may be used alone or in combination with some of the skincare products mentioned above. They include light therapy, chemical peels, and steroid injections. Our team at Mitchell Dermatology also has the skill, knowledge, and professional tools to safely and gently remove whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts with drainage and extraction techniques.
Acne shouldn’t define you at any age. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Mitchell, call 419.871.3636 (Fremont, OH office) or 419.871.3737 (Perrysburg office) today.
